Join Dean Walsh for the second of two 5-weekly Saturday morning yoga-stretch classes. Yoga training was a key component in Dean's formative dance and performance training (3 years full-time at the Bodenwieser Dance Centre in Sydney 1988-1990).
Dean commenced Iyengar Yoga practice (sustained postures) in 1989, under the very fine tutelage of Sue-Ellen Kholer in Rozelle, Peter Thomson at his school in Glebe and then, in 1992, he also commenced regular practice in Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga (dynamic breath and sequential postures), over a three year period with Simon Borg-Olivier at his school, Yoga Synergy, in Bondi.
Dean has been teaching contemporary dance technique and yoga-influenced stretch classes since 1995 for professional dance companies and individuals, as well as at tertiary institutions for their full-time dance and theatre degrees across Australia, and in England, Scotland and The Netherlands.
He has also taught regular weekly open public yoga-influenced stretch classes for Sydney Dance Company since 1995. These classes will be in the style he has developed there; a blend of Iyengar and Ashtanga yoga principles, as well as myriad highly influential somatic practices he has been exposed to over the course of his 28 years as a professional dance practitioner. He draws from a vast experience of embodied knowledge and has refined stretch techniques he uses in his own performance, teaching and choreographic practices.
Dean is also an avid scuba diver, breath-held diver and marine conservationist and incorporates aspects of related breath techniques drawn from these practices, as well as the Pranayama breathing techniques aligned with yoga.
He teaches inclusively and caters for diverse minds, bodies and abilities.
Saturday mornings 8:30am-10:00am, commencing 20th Oct – 17th Nov (5 weeks).
